Giveler--singlequotes Mill

Pa.74 north from Dillsburg, York Co. for 2 miles. Right turn onto Williams Grove Rd.(SRR 21027) for 1.5 miles to left turn onto Miller Rd. After quarter mile, make left onto Locust Point Rd.(SRR 21017) for about 1-2 miles to Park Place Rd. on right. Mill is almost across from this junc.

Very large limestone and frame mill 35x75 feet in dimension, and rising 3.5 stories above the terra firma. The mill doors in the gable end facing north total three vertically. The east side has doors at various places including an enormous outlet arch for water into tailrace that has now become more of a wide ditch.

The frame part includes the upper story plus the half. Doors are painted reddish/burgundy. The mill is now a really large residence with untold amounts of square-footage. Pic taken Oct/1992.

Built in 1773. Benjamin Giveler acquired the mill on Mar. 24, 1848 from William Clark.

He expanded the mill in 1850 to a four sets of grindstones, grist mill powered with turbines. Giveler then conveyed it to Jacob K. Kunkle in 1898.

He turned it into a power generating station for Cumberland Electric, later known as Dillsburg Electric and later Metropolitan Edison. Operations ceased in 1932. It is now a private, residential dwelling.
