Verse for Thought
"...In some ways Adam is like Christ who came later...There is a lot of difference between Adam's sin and God's gift. That one sin brought punishment. But God's gift made it possible for us to be acceptable to him, even though we have sinned many times."
({Romans 5:14c & 16})

The earlier wooden grist mill and barn were built along the Passiac River on land originally owned by William Penn. Lewis's grandson, Richard Southard aquired the lands, mill & barn (called The Grain House) in 1777. The mill became important in supplying Washington's troops, with food essentials including flour and meal, at the winter encampment at nearby Jockey Hollow the winter of 1779-80.

Various owners came and went in the later part of the 19th century. By 1929 the mill with its interior overshot waterwheel was in disrepair, perhaps not even operating.

The mill and barn were purchased by William Childs in 1929, along with the miller's house, now known as the Childs House.

A segmented & banded French buhr millstone behind the mill. Very similar toi the segmented millstone from the second picture, simulating a millstone hoist used to lift millstones & move them to an area where the millwright can sharpen them.

The barn was moved meticulously across US 202 and became the Olde Mill Inn. It remains vertually the same as it was 200 years ago. Childs, along with his brother Samuel, went on to establish a cross-country chain of 107 restaurants. They were the first employers in the United States to employe waitresses.
